Acupuncture Point Xuanji (CV21)
Location:
Lie supinely or proper sitting with one's back propped; on the mid-sternal line, at the 1st sternocostal joint.

Function:
Removing heat from the lung, relieving sore throat, and removing food stagnation.

Regional Anatomy:
Skin subcutaneous tissue-origin of greater pectoral muscle-mamubrium of sternum.
There are the supraclavicular nerve and the perforating branches of the internal thoracic artery and vein and the in this area.

Indications:
Pain in the chest, cough and Asthma.

Prescription:
Combined use with Hegu (LI 4) Yuan-Source Point) for treatment of tonsillitis; with Qihaishu (BL24) for treatment of gastroptosis; with HuagaiCV20 (Huagai (CV20)), Acupuncture Single Point Danzhong  Front-Mu Point of the Pericardium), Taiyuan (LU9) Shu-Stream Point, Yuan-Source Point), Acupuncture Single Point Jianjing, Jianzhongshu (SI 15), and Zusanli (ST 36) He-Sea Point) for treatment of asthma; and with Zusanli (ST 36) for treatment of dyspepsia.

Methods:
Insert the needle subcutaneously to 0.5-1 cun depth; needling response: local distention and pain; moxibustion: using 3-5 moxa-cones, or mild moxibustion for 10 min.
Note:
The point should be punctured toward the anterior and inferior aspect instead of deeply toward the posterior aspect, due to fact that posterior to the thymusgland there are the left brachiocephalic veins, the aortic arch and its branches.
