What is Bai Shao Yao or White Peony Root? It was recorded first in “Shen Nong’s Materia Medica”, and classified into Bai and Chi Shao Yao since Tao Hongjing. Currently, in terms of medicinal purpose, the former is mostly cultivated while the latter mostly grows in the wild.
What is Bai Qian or Cynanchum Rhizome? Also known as Cynanchum Rhizome and Willowleaf Swallowwort Rhizome, it refers to the root of cynanchum stauntonii (Decne.) or cynanchum glaucescens (Decne.), which grows in a few of provinces in China like Jiangsu, Anhui, Zhejiang, and Guizhou, etc.
What is Japanese blood grass or imperata cylindrica? Commonly known as Imperata Cylindrica, it refers to the root of a species in the genus Imperata. And some other names for this herb include cogon grass, wolly grass, blady grass, Bai Mao, and kunai grass, etc.
What is Bai Jiang Cao or Patrinia? Also known as Herba Patriniae or Thlaspi in the west, it refers to the whole herb of valerianaceae. Actually there are a few of them and sometimes it includes Patrinia Villosa juss, Patrinia sca-biosaefolia Fisch., and other kindred plants.

What is Bai Hua She She Cao (Oldenlandia)? Also known as Herba Oldenlandia Diffusa and Herba Hedyotis Diffusae, it refers to a plant of the genus Saxifraga in Rubiaceae, which mainly grows in Japan and the southern part of China.
What is Bai Hua She (Agkistrodon)? In west it refers to dried gutted trunk of Agkistrodon or Bungarus Snake. And it is also one of commonly used herbs for stroke. Dried Agkistrodon snakes curl up like a disc, head in middle, 18 to 25cm in diameter, trunk about 3cm in diameter.
What is lily bulb? Also known as bulbus lilii in west, it refers to the dried fleshy petal-like layers of Lilium lancifolium Thunb., Lilium brownii F.E.Brown var. viridulum Baker, or Lilium pumilum DC. In China it is cultivated across the country, especially in Hunan and Zhejiang provinces.
What are ginkgo nuts? Actually they refer to the seeds of ginkgo tree, also known as Ginkgo biloba in Latin and Yin Xing in Chinese. This is one of rare Deciduous Trees with orange-yellow drupe fruit, which blossoms in May and matures in October.
