Unproven but suggested by recent research, high levels of DNA fragmentation may reduce sperm viability. The measuring process destroys the sperm being tested so a number of them are checked and the percentage fragmented is calculated. Low levels of DNA fragmentation are thought to be normal and the normal fertilisation process is thought to filter these out. However, it is thought that sperm DNA fragmentation can account for some of the cases of infertility otherwise classified as unexplained.
