Renal colic is a moderate to severe form of abdominal pain usually attributed to kidney stones. The pain begins in the abdomen and circulates to the groin. It may be a dull pain or a sharp, acute pain; the acute form is described as one of the most intense pain sensations a human being is capable of experiencing -- worse than childbirth, burns, broken bones, or gunshot wounds. Depending on how the kidney stone manifests, the pain may come in waves, as a result of ureteric peristalsis. Sometimes it is constant instead. It may be stronger in the area of the kidneys or in the area of the bladder, or felt equally in both areas.
