TCM Diagnosis for Large Intestinal Cancer

This disease is characterized by principal deficiency and secondary excess. The cases with agglomeration of dampness and heat or stagnation of toxic materials and blood stasis belong to excess; those with deficiency of liver yin and stomach yin, deficiency of qi and blood, deficiency of spleen yang and kidney yang or deficiency of liver yin and kidney yin belong to deficiency. Excess complicated with deficiency is usually seen during the progress of the diseases. Therefore eliminating pathogenic factors and supporting healthy qi is the treatment principle. Damp heat and excess of blood stasis are common at the early stage.

Essentials for Diagnosis
(1) Patients with chronic colitis, colon adenomatous polyp, especially those with a familial history of intestinal polyposis have changes of bowel evacuation habit recently, such as diarrhea, alternate appearance of constipation and diarrhea, abdominal discomfort and hematochezia.

(2) Iron-deficiency anemia with unknown causes, emaciation, lassitude, or intestinal obstruction, abdominal mass, abdominal pain are highly suspected as intestinal cancer.

(3) There appears positive occult blood in stools, reduced ferrohemoglobin in routine blood test and increased carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA).

(4) The tumor can be felt by digital examination of rectum, and those that can not be touched by digital examination of rectum can be found by rectoscope, romanoscope or fiberenteroscope. The biopsy may be done when necessary. Barium enema or double contrast radiograph may find filling defect in the cancer area with damage of the mucosa, stiffness of the intestinal wall and narrow intestinal cavity.

In TCM, a disease or a symptom might be caused by one pathogenic factor, even two or three pathogenic factors. When diagnosing a disease or a symptom, TCM doctors must follow the principle of "Syndrome Dfferentiation", and then "Suit the Remedy to the Case". In order to gain a more definite and valuable diagnosis, it's important and necessary for the doctor to learn the detailed health information of the patient, including his/her disease duration, age, sex, height, weight, family history, urine, stool, diet, sleep, sweat, energy, mood (emotion), as well as the tongue conditions and the palm conditions, etc. If you would want our expert to create a TCM diagnosis, you're welcome to contact us.
