This is a disease in women characterized by lower abdominal pain before, during, or after the menstrual period. The pain may radiated to lumbar and sacral regions, and severe pain may cause fainting. It is also called menstrual abdominal pain. Dysmenorrhea often occurs in patients with hypoplasia of the uterus, extreme anteversion or retroversion of uterus, narrowed cervical canal, menstrual discharge with flakes of endometrium, endometriosis, and pelvic inflammation.
  
Applications of hand therapy:
  
Massage therapy:

Location: Kidney, reproductive, and reproductive gland areas, thenar and hypothenar prominences, interosseous space between the fourth and fifth metacarpal bones, uterus reflective point, and cardiac palpitation point.
  
Method of manipulation: Both hands are rubbed to produce a hot sensation. Pushing and pressing thenar and hypothenar prominences; heavy pressing maneuver applied at kidney, reproductive, and reproductive gland areas; pinching and pressing maneuvers at interosseous space between fourth and fifth metacarpal bones; and heavy pinching maneuver at uterus and cardiac palpitation points.
  
Acupuncture therapy:
  
At regular and extra acupoint:
  
Location: Hegu (LI 4) acupoint.
  
Method of manipulation: The needle is inserted for 3.3 cm to apply strong needling stimulation.
  
At reflective points:
  
Location: Triple energizer point and waist point.

Method of manipulation: The needles are inserted for 1 cm to apply medium needling stimulation.
  
At acupoint beside the second metacarpal bone:
   
Location: Lower abdomen acupoint.
   
Method of manipulation: The needle is inserted for 3.3 cm and retained for 20 minutes after twisting, lifting, and thrusting stimulation.
   
Hand bath:
   
Recipe: Fructus Crataegi (Shanzha) 30 g, Flos Carthami (Honghua) 10 g, Wulingzhi (Faeces Togopterorum) 15 g, Caesalpinia sappan (Sumu) 15 g, Rhizoma Corydalis (Yanhusuo)15 g, Mike (Fructus Papaveris) 20 g, Daemonorops draco (Xuejie) 20 g, and dried ginger 10 g.

Function: To promote blood circulation, release blood stasis, warm meridians, and stop pain.
   
Method of manipulation: A hot decoction of these herbs is used to steam and wash both hands for 20-30 minutes, two to three times a day.
