Jade Mortar and Pestle
Shang Dynasty
Unearthed at the Fuhao Tomb, Yin remains, Anyang, Henan Province in 1976. Mortar: h: 23.2 cm, outer d: 29.5 cm, inner d: 16 cm, dp: 13 cm, wall 8 cm thick. Pestle:L: 28 cm. The red coloration at the mouth of the mortar is due to traces of cinnabar. The pestle is a brown cylindrical bar with marks of use. Cinnabar is both a dyestuff and a medicine. This seems to be medical apparatus. (Collection of Museum of Yin Remains, Anyang, Henan Province.)
