In case of severe constipation with abdominal pain, increase the dosage of No. 1 and No. 2; in case of dominant lassitude, increase the dosage of No. 6 and No. 7.
Elucidation:
The syndrome is due to excessive heat accumulating in the yangming-fu organs without descending, consuming and impairing qi and blood. It should be treated by purging away heat, supplementing qi and nourishing blood. The first four ingredients (namely those of Da Chengqi Tang) eliminate the excessive heat accumulating in the stomach and intestine, while the rest three supplement qi and nourish blood. Their combined application can achieve the purpose of strengthening body resistance to eliminate pathogenic factors and purging away heat without impairing healthy qi.
Jiegeng (Radix Platycodi) is meant to disperse the stagnated lung-qi and eliminate heat from the intestine by purgation, while Shengjiang (Rhizoma Zingiberis Recens) and Dazao (Fructus Ziziphi Jujubae) are to reinforce the stomach and spleen and prevent them from being impaired by purgation. All the drugs in compatibility ensure the results of purgation with reinforcement, strengthening body resistance with pathogenic factors eliminated.
