Since the lung and heart are in the chest, these acupoints are usually punctured obliquely or horizontally 0.5 -0.8 cun. The acupoints on the conception vessel are needled horizontally. Those on the intercostal space are usually needled laterally along the ribs.
Tiantu (CV 22)--The trachea is in the deeper layer, and the aortic arch and its branches are located posterior to the manubrium of the sternum. The needle is inserted perpendicularly 0.2 - 0.3 cun and then the needle tip is pushed 0.5 - 1 cun slowly downward along the posterior aspect of the manubrium of the sternum and the anterior aspect of the trachea. The needle should not be inserted too deep, avoiding pricking blood vessels or trachea. It is also forbidden to puncture too deep and obliquely to the lateral side lest the lung be impaired.
Tanzhong (CV 17)--It is usually needled horizontally downwards and laterally for the treatment of mammary diseases.
Ruzhong (ST 17)--Acupuncture and moxibustion are forbidden to perform on this acupoint. It only serves as a landmark for locating acupoints.
Rugen (ST 18)--It is needled horizontally or obliquely.
