  • TCM Diagnosis for Palpitation
Palpitations can be associated with an isolated "skipped beat" sensation or, if the palpitations are prolonged, there can be a feeling of fluttering or fullness in the chest. Sometimes patients describe a marked fullness in their throat associated with shortness of breath, and it may be difficult to decide if the fullness is due to palpitations or due to angina. This is especially so if the palpitations have subsided and are not present when the affected person seeks medical care. Prolonged episodes can be associated with chest pain, shortness of breath, sweating, and, nausea and vomiting. Some types of heart rhythm problems can cause light-headedness or even passing out (fainting).

    Key Points for Diagnosis:
According to the theory of Chinese medicine, there are several different patterns and underlying conditions that can lead to palpitation. The organ systems according to Chinese medicine are interrelated, and when one is in the imbalanced state of yin and Yang, it affects the other organs. Therefore, one condition such as palpitation can manifest itself in many different syndromes. Herbal prescriptions would be combined relying on indications. Following are some of the main patterns related to the conditions of palpitation:
    1. Deficiency of heart Yang
    2. Stagnation of heart blood
    3. Deficiency of heart Qi and Yin
    4. Deficiency of heart and lung Qi

In TCM, a disease or a symptom might be caused by one pathogenic factor, even two or three pathogenic factors. When diagnosing a disease or a symptom, TCM doctors must follow the principle of "Syndrome Dfferentiation", and then "Suit the Remedy to the Case". In order to gain a more definite and valuable diagnosis, it's important and necessary for the doctor to learn the detailed health information of the patient, including his/her disease duration, age, sex, height, weight, family history, urine, stool, diet, sleep, sweat, energy, mood (emotion), as well as the tongue conditions and the palm conditions, etc. If you would want our expert to create a TCM diagnosis, you're welcome to contact us.
