Wandai Tang, Decoction for Treating Leukorrhagia

Source: Fu Qingzhu Nvke (Fu Qingzhu’s Obsterics and Gynecology).

Ingredients:
No. 1 Chaobaizhu (Rhizama Atractyodis Praeparatae) 30 g;
No. 2 Chaoshanyao (Rhizoma Dioscoreae Praeparatae) 30 g;
No. 3 Renshen (Radix Ginseng) 6 g;
No. 4 Chaobaishaoyao (Radix Paeoniae Praeparatae) 15g
No. 5 Chaocheqianzi (Semen Plantaginis Praeparatae) 9 g;
No. 6 Cangzhu (Rhizoma Atractylodis) 9 g;
No. 7 Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae) 3 g;
No. 8 Chenpi (Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae) 1.5 g;
No. 9 Chaojingjiesui (Spica Schizonepetae) 1.5 g;
No. 10 Chaihu (Radix Bupleuri) 1.8 g.

Administration:
Decoct the above drugs in water for oral application.

Actions:
Invigorating the middle-energizer and reinforcing the spleen, eliminating dampness and relieving leukorrhagia.

Clinical Application:
This recipe is indicated for leukorrhagia due to deficiency of the spleen, marked by thin whitish or yellowish leukorrhea without foul smell, pale complexion, lassitude, loose stool, pale tongue with whitish fur, soft and feeble pulse. It is applicable to cervicitis, vaginitis, and chronic pelvic inflammation, which are marked by lingering thin whitish leukorrhagia due to deficiency of spleen-qi. In case of lower abdominal pain with localized cold sensation, add Paojiang (Rhizoma Zingiberis Praeparatae) and Xiaohuixiang (Fructus Foeniculi) to warm yang and dispel cold.

If concomitant with soreness and weakness of waist and knees, add Duzhong (Cortex Eucommiae) and Xuduan (Radix Dipsaci) to reinforce the liver and kidney and strengthen waist and knees. In case of incessant leukorrhea in larege amount, add Duanlonggu (calcined Os Draconis) and Duanmuli (calcined Concha Ostreae) to stop leukorrhagia. In case of yellowish leukorrhea, add Huangbai (Cortex Phellodendri) and Cheqianzi (Semen Plantaginis) to eliminate damp heat.

Elucidation:
The syndrome is caused by stagnation of the liver subjugating the spleen and dysfunction of the spleen in transportation due to deficiency, leading to accumulation and downward attack of damp turbidity. It should be treated by reinforcing the spleen and eliminating dampness. The first two ingredients in larger dosages are meant to invigorate qi of the middle-energizer and rein- force the spleen to remove dampness, acting as monarch drugs. Ingredients No. 3 and No. 6 bear the respective function of restoring qi and drying dampness, helping bring about the effect of the monarch drug.

Ingredients No. 4 and No. 10 possess the respective function of nourishing the liver and regulating the stagnated liver-qi, relieving the accompanying symptoms as stagnation of the liver-qi. These four together serve as minister drugs. Ingredient No. 5 possesses the effect of promoting diuresis, No.8 promoting the flow of qi to eliminate dampness and No. 9 dispersing the stagnated liver-qi and lifting yang, which all play the role of adjuvant drug. Used as guiding drug, No. 7 can supplement qi and mediate the properties of other drugs.

Cautions: This recipe is contraindicated for stenchy yellowish leukorrhea with greasy yellowish fur.
