No.3  Shengdihuang (Radix Rehmanniae) 25 g
No.4  Dahuang (Radix et Rhizoma Rhei) 9 g
No.5  Mangxiao (Natrii Sulfas) 4.5 g

Administration:
Decoct the first four ingredients in water; dissolve ingredient No. 5 in the decoction after the residue is removed.

Actions:
Nourishing yin, increasing fluid, purging heat and inducing defecation.

Clinical Application:
This recipe is used to treat syndrome of constipation due to heat accumulation and yin deficiency, marked by feverish body, constipation, epigastric and abdominal distention and fullness, dry mouth and lips, reddened tongue with yellowish fur, thready rapid pulse. It can be modified to treat high fever with constipation from acute infectious diseases, and dry stool from protracted hemorrhoid, which is the result of retained heat and impairment of yin fluid with chief symptoms as constipation, dry lips, yellowish and dry fur. If the accumulated heat is not so excessive, lessen the dosage of ingredients No. 4 and No. 5 accordingly.

Elucidation:
The syndrome arises when accumulated heat in the stomach burns body fluid and causes it to fail to moisten the intestine. For this the method of relieving constipation by purgation and producing body fluid by nourishing yin should be used. Ingredient No. 1, in larger dosage than other’s, is the monarch drug with the effects of nourishing yin for production of body fluid, and purging heat for relieving constipation. Ingredients No. 3 and No.2 function as minister drug to help bring about the effects of the monarch drug. The last two ingredients are meant to soften and moisten hard mass as adjuvant drug. All Ingredients in compatibility can restore yin fluid and eliminate hard mass so that the disappearance of all symptoms ensues.

Cautions:
It should be applied with great caution to those who manifest subdued fever and mild abdominal pain, which pertain to yin deficiency without excessive heat.
