Source: Zabing Zhengzhi Xinyi (New Concepts for Diagnosis and Treatment of Miscellaneous Diseases).

Ingredients:
No. 1 Tianma (Rhizoma Gastrodiae) 9 g;
No. 2 Gouteng (Ramulus Uncariae cure Uncis) (to be decocted later) 12 g;
No. 3 Shijueming (Concha Haliotidis) (to be decocted first) 18 g;
No. 4 Zhizi (Fructus Gardeniae) 9 g;
No. 5 Huangqin (Radix Scutellariae) 9 g;
No. 6 Chuanniuxi (Radix Achyranthis Bidentatae) 12 g;
No. 7 Duzhong (Cortex Eucommiae) 9 g;
No. 8 Yimucao (Herba Leonuri) 9 g;
No. 9 Sangjisheng (Ramulus Loranthi) 9 g;
No. 10 Yejiaoteng (Caulis Polygoni Multiflori) 9 g;
No. 11 Fushen (Sclerotium Poriae Circum Radicem Pini) 9 g.
 
Administration:
Decoct the above drugs in water for oral application.
     
Actions:
Calming the liver to stop endogenous wind, clearing away heat and promoting blood circulation, nourishing the liver and kidney.
  
Clinical Application:
This recipe is indicated for syndrome of hyperactive liver-yang and upward disturbance of liver-wind, marked by headache, vertigo, insomnia, reddened tongue with yellowish fur, taut pulse. It is applicable to hypertension with the above symptoms. In case of severe headache and vertigo, add Shanyangjiao (horn of goat) and Daizheshi (Ochra Haematitum) to strengthen the effect of suppressing the hyperactive yang and expelling endogenous wind.

Elucidation:
The syndrome is caused by deficiency of the liver and kidney, hyperactive liver-yang and liver-wind stirring in the body, and disturbance of the mind. It should be treated by expelling liver-wind, clearing away heat, promoting blood flow, and reinforcing the liver and kidney. The first two ingredients are used as monarch drugs to expel the liver-wind. No. 3 and No. 6 act as minister drugs, the former is capable of expelling endogenous wind and suppressing hyperactive yang an6 the latter leading blood downward.

The two is used together to enhance the monarch drugs in suppressing hyperactive yang, sending down reversed flow of qi, and expelling endogenous wind. The rest serves as adjuvant drug, of which No. 4 and No. 5 clear away heat from the liver meridian, No. 8 promotes blood flow and induces diuresis so as to check the hyperactive and adverse ascent yang. No. 7 and No. 9 can reinforce the liver and kidney, which are the root cause of this syndrome, and No. 10 and No. 11 can tranquilize the mind.
