If concomitant with jaundice, add Yinchenhao (Herba Artemisiae Scopariae) and Zhizi (Fructus Gardeniae) to eliminate damp heat for relieving jaundice. In case of pain over the lower abdomen, add Yanhusuo (Rhizoma Corydalis ) and Baishaoyao (Radix Paeoniae Alba) to regulate the circulation of qi and blood for relieving spasm.

Elucidation:
The syndrome results from excessive gallbladder-heat in shaoyang meridian concomitant with phlegm retention caused by damp heat in the middle-energizer. It should be treated by removing dampness from the gallbladder, and regulating the stomach to resolve phlegm. Ingredient No. 1, fragrant in nature, can disperse heat from shaoyang meridian and remove phlegm as well. Ingredient No. 5 has the functions of purging the accumulated fire from the gall bladder meridian and drying dampness. The two play the role of monarch drug.

Ingredients No. 2 and No. 3 regulate the stomach to arrest vomiting, and remove phlegm to eliminate dampness, while ingredients No. 6 and No. 7 regulate the stomach and dissolve phlegm, and promote the flow of qi to relieve chest distress. These four in compatibility achieve the purpose of regulating the stomach and flow of qi as well as removing phlegm and descending the adverse flow of qi, acting as minister drug. Ingredients No. 4 and No. 8 are used as adjuvant drug to eliminate damp heat and descend the accumulated heat. Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae) also functions as guiding drug with the action of mediating the properties of other drugs.
